Blubber Experiment

In Science we are learning about habitats and adapting in those habitats.  In this experiment students placed their hands in ice water.  Students then had the opportunity to place their hand in a glove, and then have their hand covered in shortening before re-dipping it into the ice water to feel what a difference the layer of shortening made on the temperature of the ice water.  We learned that the shortening represents a thick layer of oily skin that helps to protect animals from frozen temperatures.
