Just a Delicious Day of Science!

Last week we were studying the layers of the Earth.  We created a “layers of the Earth” booklet and made some delicious layers of the Earth treats.  We used Oreos to represent the crust, the cream of the cookie to represent the mantle, chocolate syrup to represent the liquid outer core, and an m&m to represent the solid inner core.  We discussed the differences in each layer then dug into our yummy snacks!

Shaving Cream Spelling

On Friday we had fun with our spelling words for next week.  We spelled them in shaving cream! The students had some VERY messy fun and our desks got nice and clean in the process :)

Chrysanthemum

Before we read the book each student got a paper heart.  Each time Chrysanthemum was teased because of her name, we crumpled up the heart. Every time someone did something nice to her, we tried our best to smooth it out. By the end of the story, the heart was a wrinkled mess that could not be smoothed out perfectly.

The students got the connection that our own hearts feel wrinkled and crumpled sometimes when we don't like what someone says. Words do hurt. We then tried to put band-aids on the heart as a way to show that we can own our mistakes and apologize, and that the heart will probably still be wrinkled, but it is healing.

Graphing With Goodies!

In Math we are learning about graphing.  Last week we focused on tally charts and picture graphs.  On Wednesday we tallied how many of each type of marshmallows we got in our box of Lucky Charms.  Each student got a handful of Lucky Charms and tallied their marshmallows.  We then went around the room discussing how many of each type each student had.

Thursday was picture graphs.  We taste tested three different flavors of popcorn and each student decided which of the three they liked best.  Then we made a tally chart and picture graph of the data before enjoying more of our favorite flavor!
